Hemlock Semiconductor Corporation (HSC)

Polycrystalline Silicon for Electronics and Solar Devices

Hemlock Semiconductor Corporation (HSC), a Dow Corning joint venture with two Japanese companies, the largest producer of polycrystalline silicon in the world, is planning its third expansion in four years. Targeted for 2010, the $1 billion expansion will increase their output by 90%.

HSC chose to expand in Hemlock, Michigan, because it provided the fastest time-to-market, lower capital costs, and the ability to leverage the company’s skilled employees.

  • Developed an economic development package valued at $283.5 million.
  • Negotiated a competitive energy rate.
  • MEDC granted $3 million to Thomas Township for public infrastructure improvements related to water delivery.
  • Developed solar related legislation to support new investment.

“We received tremendous support from state and local officials, which was key to us locating this expansion here in Hemlock,” said Rick Doornbos, president and CEO of Hemlock Semiconductor Corporation, “Michigan Governor Jennifer M. Granholm and Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) CEO James C. Epolito were personally involved in supporting this expansion, and we appreciate the attention they gave us.”

As a result of HSC’s growth, Dow Corning Corporation’s Midland, Michigan, site will expand and upgrade to accommodate HSC’s increasing need for raw materials.
